Questioning Christianity

The more I think about it, and the more interactions I have with other Christians, the more I see how afraid they are. Now, fear can sometimes be useful, but I would argue that in this instance it is not.

What are they afraid of?

Questions.

Christians are afraid of questioning their faith, the Bible and God. Not all, but I think most. I used to be afraid of asking questions; of doubting the truth claims of the Christian faith.

But I had an epiphany one day, and that was that I had been treating God as if He were some fragile piece of glass that would crack under the slightest bit of pressure. I had been acting as though God would wither under my intense gaze.

What!?

Ridiculous, right?

If God is real, and He is the Creator and most powerful Being in all existence, then how did I think that He wouldn't be able to handle my doubts and curiosities?

I think we do both ourselves and God a disservice when we treat Him this way. Not only that but when we refuse to ask the hard questions then we are closing ourselves off from all possibilities other than those we've been conditioned to believe.

The book of Philippians, chapter two, talks about us having the same mind as Christ. I don't know about you but I think that if we are to have the mind of Christ, that doesn't involve willingly blinding ourselves to the world.

People have doubts. We have questions and we crave answers. Yet so many choose to forgo seeking answers for the comfort of "giving it to God."

We use God's sovereignty as a way to remove responsibility from ourselves when what we should be doing is seeking the truth regardless of whether or not it hurts.

One doesn't find the truth, or the Truth, simply by sitting in a pew and accepting whatever it is that the preacher says. It is part of our nature as human beings to want to seek and explore and we close ourselves off from our God-given ability to do that when we refuse to even ask a simple question.

Like, what if God isn't real? Or, what if Jesus was just a man like me? Or, what if there is no afterlife? These are just three of an endless stream of questions that I have had my entire life. It wasn't until I started expressing the questions that I began to find the answers.

I guess what I'm wanting to say more than anything is that just because you have questions doesn't make you a bad person. It doesn't mean you're "going to hell." It doesn't mean that God isn't real and it doesn't mean that He doesn't love you.

Ask your questions and find your answers.

Always seek the truth and always, always, keep moving forward.

Stay Strong,

Jon
